A sampling system for access and treatment along the central nervous system is disclosed. The sampling system comprises a filter cartridge (16) designed to filter cerebrospinal fluid. The filter cartridge has an inlet region (18) configured to couple with the catheter and configured to receive cerebrospinal fluid, one or more filters, and an outlet region (20) configured to couple with the outlet of the catheter and configured to direct filtered cerebrospinal fluid toward the catheter. The system includes a sampling port (26a) in fluid communication with the filter cartridge.
