The optoelectronic device (10) has a transmitting device (12) for transmitting an optical signal (16) which is modulated with at least one first modulation frequency f1; a receiving device (26) having at least one light receiving element (26a) for generating a received signal from the light signal (22) reflected in the detection region (18); and a control and evaluation unit (28) which is designed to determine a phase shift and a light time of flight between the emitted light signal and the reflected light signal, and to evaluate a first amplitude determined by the received signal, in order to identify an erroneous measurement resulting from reflection of an optical signal at an object (20 ') in a detection region outside an explicit region of a phase-based optical time-of-flight method.
