Zusammenfassung: | There is provided a particle for use as a precursor material for the synthesis of a lithium ion cathode active material for a lithium ion battery, comprising: a non-lithiated nickel oxide particle of formula MOx wherein M comprises 80 at% or more Ni, and wherein x is 0.7 to 1.2, M optionally not comprising boron in the MOx crystal structure; and a modifier oxide intermixed with the non-lithiated nickel oxide particles, coated on the non-lithiated nickel oxide particles, present within the non-lithiated nickel oxide particles, or a combination thereof, where the modifier oxide is associated with the non-lithiated nickel oxide such that calcination at 500 DEG C for 2 hours results in microcrystalline growth of 2 nanometers or less as measured by XRD. Methods of forming electrochemically active particles using the precursor nickel oxide are also provided.
