Context-dependent in-call video codec switching

A method (300) for video codec switching in a context-dependent call includes receiving an indication (136) that a remote endpoint (110) includes a capability to switch from an initial video codec (132) to a secondary video codec during the call. During a call (130) with a remote endpoint, the method includes determining that performance of the encoder satisfies a codec switching threshold (222). The codec switching threshold indicates that the performance of the encoder demonstrates that switching of the midstream of the call from the initial video codec is reasonable.
