Transparent smears are purposefully formed on the magnetic recording head to ensure that the magnetic recording head does not overheat and lead to short driver life. The transparent smear is formed from a material present in a magnetic medium. The transparent smear is formed by pre-processing the magnetic recording head using a transparent material from the magnetic medium. The pre-processing is performed without writing any data to the magnetic medium. Once the transparent smear is in place, writing can be performed. If the transparent smear is degraded, the magnetic recording head may be reprocessed at a later time. In addition, if an optically absorbing smear is produced, it may be removed and a new transparent smear may be formed.
