Specifically disclosed herein is an article comprising a path extending through at least a portion of a surface of the article. The path is defined by at least one channel passing through at least a portion of the surface, or by a first plurality of spaced features disposed on or within at least a portion of the surface; the spacing features are arranged in the plurality of groups; the grouping of the features includes repeating units; the spaced features within the group are spaced apart by an average distance of about 1 nm to about 500 [mu] m to define a path through the plurality of spaced features; each feature has a surface substantially parallel to a surface on an adjacent feature; each feature portion is spaced from its adjacent feature portion; the groups of features are arranged relative to each other to define a tortuous path.
