The purpose of the present invention is to provide an automatic transport device and an automatic transport method for a transport object, whereby it is possible to minimize the number of sensors for detecting whether or not there is a protruding portion from the transport object to a set position. The automatic conveying device comprises: a pair of first inductive sensors which, in a state in which a conveying object is conveyed, detect whether or not there is a protruding portion from both side surfaces of the conveying object conveyed through a conveying route to a set position; and a pair of second inductive sensors that detect whether there is a protruding portion from the front surface and the rear surface of the conveyance object to a set position in a state where the conveyance object is stopped. 本发明的目的在于，提供可使用于检测从运送对象至设定位置为止是否具有突出的部分的传感器的数量最小化的运送对象的自动运送装置及自动运送方法。用于实现上述目的的自动运送装置包括：一对第一感应传感器，在运送对象被运送的状态下，检测从通过运送路线运送的上述运送对象的两侧面至设定位置为止是否具有突出的部分；以及一对第二感应传感器，在上述运送对象停止的状态下，检测从上述运送对象的前表面和后表面至设定位置为止是否具有突出的部分。
