The invention discloses a novel target for preventing and treating vascular complications of diabetes, namely calmodulin (CaM), and the down-regulation of the expression level of the calmodulin in vascular endothelium is an important reason for vascular endothelial injury of diabetes. The gene therapy of the adeno-associated virus carrying the CALM1 can reverse the expression of CaM of vascular endothelium of diabetes, enhance the activity of nitric oxide synthase and the generation of nitric oxide and vascular endothelial growth factors, promote angiogenesis and prevent and treat vascular complications of diabetes.
