Methods, systems, and devices are described for wireless communication to enable a base station to configure additional reference signals, which may be referred to as configured reference signals, for inclusion in transmissions to a user equipment (UE). The UE may send a report to the base station indicating capabilities for the UE supporting the configured reference signal, and the base station may configure a pattern of the configured reference signal. The base station may send an indication of the mode to the UE, where the indication may include one or more characteristics associated with the configured reference signal.
