In an exemplary embodiment, a method is provided that includes obtaining, by a processor, a set of inputs related to one or more characteristics for predicting purge flow of a purge canister system of a vehicle air intake system; obtaining, by a processor, data from a sensor about the vehicle intake system for use by a neural network to enable the processor to classify a set of inputs including one or more features for purge flow control for predicting the presence of purge content in the vehicle intake system; and obtaining, by the processor, an output from the neural network, where the output is configured as a binary or continuous output, to instruct a vehicle controller to perform a fueling control action by causing the fueling controller to select different gain sets and adaptation strategies based on binary output flags in the case of a binary output model or to apply regulatory factors to a fueling command in the case of a cont
