The invention relates to a self-punching fastening element for connecting a first workpiece to a second workpiece, in particular wherein the workpiece is a sheet metal part. The fastening element comprises: an annular section circumferentially surrounding an opening of the fastening element and having a workpiece contact surface delimited at a radially outer side by a stamped edge; and a shaft section connected to the annular section by means of a coupling section, arranged coaxially with the opening, extending from a side of the annular section remote from the workpiece contact surface, and having an outer contour designed to be complementary to an inner contour of the opening, such that the shaft section can be at least partially guided through the opening after the connection to the annular section is separated.
