Assigning categories and symmetric keys for each category for messages

The disclosure provides for assigning categories and symmetric keys for each category for messages. Systems and methods described herein provide for assigning categories to signals and corresponding messages for prioritization and transmission over a vehicle CAN bus. The assigned classification is used to select an authentication key specific to each classification of the message. A node of the CAN bus may include different key sets based on the classification of messages processed at the node.
