The invention relates to a casting unit for a die casting machine. The casting unit comprises a casting container with a casting chamber, a casting piston arranged in the casting chamber, a melt pool connection opening, a melt inlet channel from the melt pool connection opening to the casting chamber in an axially movable manner, and a melt outlet channel which is separated from the melt inlet channel and is led out of the casting chamber, and a shut-off control valve for the melt inlet passage. The shut-off control valve has a valve body arranged on the casting vessel, and has a valve seat and a valve closing body. The valve closing body is movable relative to the valve seat between an open position and a closed position.
