The physical coding sub-layer comprises a bit width encoder, a parallel-serial conversion module, a serial-parallel conversion module, a bit width decoder and a carrier detection module, the bit width encoder is coupled to the medium independent interface and the parallel-serial conversion module, the bit width decoder is coupled to the medium independent interface and the serial-parallel conversion module. The carrier detection module is coupled to the media independent interface, the bit width encoder and the bit width decoder.
