A method for manufacturing a filter having a columnar honeycomb structure comprises: a step for preparing a columnar honeycomb structure in which a plurality of first cells and a plurality of second cells are alternately arranged adjacent to each other with porous partition walls interposed therebetween; a step in which ceramic particles containing one or both of SiC and SiN in a total amount of 50 mass% or more are adhered to the surfaces of the first cells of the columnar honeycomb structure; and a step in which the columnar honeycomb structure where the ceramic particles are adhered to the surface of the first cell, is subjected to heat oxidation treatment so as to satisfy (1) 0.05
