The additive comprises a component I silicon dioxide, a component II polyvinyl butyral organic alcohol solution and a component III Ca (OH) 2, and a mass percentage of the component I silicon dioxide to the component II polyvinyl butyral organic alcohol solution to the component III Ca (OH) 2 is (1-4): (1-4): (0.5-2). Application of the additive in preparation of a sand core is disclosed. The addition amount of a sodium silicate binder is less than or equal to 3.0% in the production and use processes, and a sand sample prepared from mixed molding sand is high in strength and good in moisture absorption resistance.
