The invention provides an automatic tube pickup device and method, which are used for pulling out a yarn ball paper tube. The automatic tube pickup device is arranged above a yarn ball conveying line and comprises a rack, a controller, a detection unit, a clamping mechanism, a tube pickup mechanism and a shredding mechanism; and the detection unit, the clamping mechanism, the tube pickup mechanism and the shredding mechanism are arranged on the rack. The detection unit is used for detecting whether yarn balls on the yarn ball conveying line are conveyed to the position below the automatic tube pickup device or not and sending the detection result to the controller. The controller is used for controlling the yarn ball conveying line, the clamping mechanism, the tube pickup mechanism and the shredding mechanism to operate in order according to the detection result of the detection unit.
