The method comprises the following steps: acquiring M-side and N-side current phasor sampling values of the transformer; calculating a differential current value in the sampling period; deleting a plurality of maximum values in the differential current values in each sampling period to obtain deleted differential current values; reserving M-side and N-side current phasor sampling values of the transformer corresponding to the deleted differential current value to obtain an M-side differential protection current sampling value and an N-side differential protection current sampling value of the transformer; and performing novel differential protection of the transformer according to the M-side differential protection current sampling value of the transformer and the N-side differential protection current sampling value of the transformer.
