The invention relates to a method for propelling an aircraft. In order to obtain electric energy, fuel is combusted and an electric machine is used, wherein the fuel is used to cool at least one partof the electric machine, and the fuel contains natural gas. The propulsion system is designed to propel an aircraft in particular according to the aforementioned method and has an electric machine inorder to obtain electric energy by combusting a fuel, wherein a natural gas tank is provided which is designed to store the fuel made with natural gas and which is part of a cooling device that is designed to cool at least one part of the electric machine.
