Zusammenfassung: | The objective of the invention is to provide a positive electrode active material for lithium secondary batteries so that high output is displayed at a high current rate. The positive electrode activematerial comprises a covering layer on the surface of a lithium-containing composite metal oxide comprising secondary particles. The secondary particles are obtained through aggregation of primary particles capable of being doped and un-doped with lithium ions. The positive electrode active material meets the following conditions (1) to (3): (1) the lithium-containing composite metal oxide comprises an alpha-NaFe02 crystalline structure presented in the formula (A): Li(NiCoM1 )O2; (2) the covering layer comprises a metal composite oxide comprising Li and M ; and (3) the average particle size of the positive electrode active material is from 2[mu]m to 20[mu]m, the BET specific surface area is from 0.1m /g to 2.5m /g and a value obtained by dividing bulk density by light density is from 1.0 to 2.0.
