The invention relates to a restraint device for a vehicle, with which, in a pre-crash phase (delta(tP)) before a predicted front-crash time (tF), a vehicle passenger (3) sitting on a vehicle seat (7)can be set upright from a comfort position (K) into an upright active position (W), in which, in a crash phase (delta(tC)) a seatbelt (5) applied to the vehicle passenger (3) exerts a restraining effect on the vehicle passenger (3), in which case an electric motor-driven reversible seatbelt tensioner (19) is activated so as to limit the restraining force (FR) exerted on the vehicle passenger (3) to a predefined force level, more specifically with forward displacement of the vehicle passenger (3) by a seatbelt force limitation distance (delta(sB)).
