The invention discloses a method and device for identifying an object through image recognition. The method comprises the following steps: carrying out morphological contour extraction on an image ofan object to obtain a binary image; carrying out boundary positioning on the binary image by adopting a contour tracking algorithm; hOG features of the binary image with the positioned boundary in thecontour are extracted; and analyzing and judging an identifiable area of the object according to the HOG characteristics to serve as a labeling surface or a code spraying surface. According to the scheme, the identifiable area of the object is judged through image recognition, and labeling/code spraying of the irregular object is achieved; and the label is pasted on the specially found identifiable area, so that the label is firmly pasted and is not easy to fall off.
