The invention provides an externally installed elevator with a fully new direct walkway to an original gate. The installed elevator is arranged on the outer side of a staircase of an old building, andthe height difference between an elevator door platform and a gate platform is not larger than 700 mm. When the elevator is installed, a walkway without steps is constructed at each floor except a first floor at one side of the staircase to connect a user gate platform and an elevator gate platform of the same floor, then old stairs or a part of old stairs of each floor except the first floor isremoved, and new stairs or a part of new stairs are built in another side of the staircase to connect the user gate platform of a current floor and an elevator gate platform of another floor.
