Zusammenfassung:	A gear unit (1) for a motor vehicle including a worm gear shaft (2), a rubber elastic buffer element (10) and contact surfaces (8.1,11.1,30.4) which face the rubber elastic buffer element. The worm gear shaft is mounted on the housing (30) through a driving-side rotatable bearing (5) and a loose-fitting-side rotatable bearing (11) so that the worm gear shaft abuts against a worm wheel (3) beforehand. The rubber elastic buffer element (10) and the contact surfaces (8.1,11.1,30.4) are constructed for restricting movement of the loose-fitting-side rotatable bearing (11) after overcoming a pretighting force. For optimizing restriction for noise development in a worm wheel mechanism, the invention suggests that at least a majority of a buffer element (10) is configured in a buffer receiving part (9) which is open to the contact surfaces (8.1,11.1,30.4) and furthermore abuts against the inner side of the buffer receiving part, wherein the buffer element (10) is configured in the buffer receiving part (9) in a pre-c
