A method for controlling access to a vehicle function includes communicating, between a vehicle controller and a portable controller, a plurality of signals. The plurality of signals include an authentication signal and a location signal. The method also includes processing, by at least one of the vehicle controller and the portable controller, the authentication signal during an authentication confirmation process to determine authentication of the portable device. The method further includes processing, by at least one of the vehicle controller and the portable controller, the location signal during a proximity confirmation process to determine whether the portable device is within a predetermined proximity of the vehicle.
