Zusammenfassung: | This method for nitriding a steel member comprises the step of nitriding a steel member in a nitriding gas atmosphere having a nitriding potential at which a [gamma]'-phase or [Epsilon]-phase iron nitride compound layer can be formed on the surface of the steel member, and the passing step of subsequently passing the steel member through an atmosphere of 425 DEG C to 600 DEG C in which the iron nitride compound layer does not grow over five minutes or more. The iron nitride compound layer has a [gamma]'-phase outermost layer and the proportion of the [gamma]' phase precipitated in the iron nitride compound layer is 40% or more.
