A medical device having an antimicrobial coating. The device has a first coating layer having an antimicrobial agent over at least part of the outer surfaces of the device. The first coating has an outer surface. There is a second discontinuous polymeric coating containing an antimicrobial agent, which is on top of and covering part of the outer surface of the first coating.
