Provided is a method and system for optimizing the fuel consumption of a two-stroke diesel engine with a plurality of cylinders, wherein at least one exhaust content parameter selected from: Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ), Dioxygen (O2 ), Hydrocarbon (HC), Total Hydrocarbon (THC), Nitrogen Oxide (NO X ), Sulphur Oxide (SO X ) is measured and the compression pressure is changed accordingly such that fuel consumption is optimized.
