An image forming apparatus comprises: a plurality of image holding bodies 1; a plurality of image writing tools 2 that writes an image on the image holding bodies 1; a movement member 5 that holds the plurality of image holding bodies 1, can be pulled out through an opening of a closing cover 4 of an apparatus housing 3 and moves in the direction opposite to the direction along which the image holding bodies 1 are arrayed; and a retreat mechanism 10 that retreats the image writing tools 2 from a movement area of the movement member 5 when the movement 5 is pulled out through the opening of the closing cover 4.
