The invention discloses an underpinning structure and method for a load bearing wall. The underpinning structure for the load bearing wall comprises a set of steel columns, a set of steel beams, base plates, anchor bolts, split screws, fiber cloth and reinforcing ribs, wherein the set of steel columns are located on the two sides of a wall body; the set of steel beams are hinged to the steel columns; the base plates are welded to the lower portions of the steel columns correspondingly; the anchor bolts are used for fixing the base plates to a floorboard; the split screws penetrate through the steel columns and are used for fixing the steel columns; the fiber cloth is fixed between the steel beams; and the reinforcing ribs are arranged between the steel columns and the base plates correspondingly. According to the underpinning structure and method for the load bearing wall, the rigidity symmetry of a building is guaranteed while the shock resistance of the building is not reduced, the interlayer rigidities are
