The invention relates to a welding seam based image identification method and image identification system. The system comprises an image acquisition unit, a feature reference unit, a feature comparison unit and a regional distinguishing unit, wherein the image acquisition unit is used for acquiring acquisition images including welding seam images and base material images; the feature reference unit is used for calculating a welding seam eigenvalue and a base material eigenvalue of a first acquisition image; the feature comparison unit is used for calculating a sub-eigenvalue of each segmented sub-image for each subsequent acquisition image; and the regional distinguishing unit is used for distinguishing a welding seam image region and a base material image region according to results of comparison between the sub-eigenvalue and the welding seam eigenvalue and between the sub-eigenvalue and the base material eigenvalue.
