The invention relates to function and wear monitoring in a charging device for an electric vehicle, in particular to a method for operating an electric charging device (10) for an electric vehicle (12). The charging device has an electrical contact (16) for connecting the electric vehicle to the charging device and a switch mechanism (28) designed to couple the contact with a power supply grid (14) depending on a switch signal (S). The failure of the charging device due to wear intension, for this purpose, in the method, at least one operation value is correspondingly detected from at least one operation parameter depending on the wear or in the switch mechanism with respect to an operation process causing the wear through an analysis mechanism (40) of the charging device, and whether a predetermined wear standard is satisfied is detected according to each detected operation value. An informing signal (W) representing a maintenance demand of the switch mechanism is generated in necessity.
