The invention discloses a transformer substation live washing robot for low-air insulators and a method. The robot comprises a vehicle walking mechanism, a power assembly, a perpendicular lifting mechanism, a water gun washing mechanism, an electrical control system and the like. The vehicle walking mechanism is of a caterpillar band type moving chassis structure. A diesel engine is adopted in the power assembly for providing power, and the power assembly is installed on a moving chassis. The perpendicular lifting mechanism is connected to the front end of the vehicle walking mechanism and provided with a two-level telescopic arm, and an upper arm of the two-level telescopic arm is connected with a work cradle head of the water gun washing mechanism through insulation supporting columns. The insulators of a transformer substation can be washed through the robot instead of manual work, an operator is located in a safe region, the safety of the operator is guaranteed, labor intensity is relieved, the washing efficiency is improved, the automation level is increased, and the positive revolutionary effect on the washing operation manner of the transformer substation in China is achieved.
