Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a force limiting device (10), particularly for a seat belt in a motor vehicle, with a controllable braking device (16) which has a liquid-filled chamber (24) with a channel (34) through which the liquid (23) can flow, an element (32) to be braked which is coupled to the seat belt, at least one sensor (18) for detecting vehicle operation data, particularly an acceleration sensor, a sensor (20) for detecting the extension of the seat belt, and a control system (22) which controls the braking performance of the braking device (16) as a function of the vehicle operating data measured and the measured extension of the seat belt. The liquid (23) is a magnetorheological liquid and a control magnet is provided which can generate a variable magnetic field in the channel (34) and can modify the viscosity of the magnetorheological liquid in the channel (34).
