Zusammenfassung:The present invention provides a liquid crystal orientation agent containing a compound (B') whose thermogravimetric reduction at 120 DEG C is 30% or less and at 250 DEG C is 90% or more as measured under a temperature increase of 40 DEG C to 20 DEG C/minute, and a polymer component (exclusive of a compound corresponding to the compound (B')). Use of such a liquid crystal orientation agent in forming a liquid crystal orientation membrane makes it possible to obtain a liquid crystal display element exhibiting high performance in various characteristics such as reliability, leveling properties, liquid crystal orientation and afterimage characteristics. For the polymer component, at least one kind of polymer (A) selected from the group consisting of polyamic acid, polyamic acid ester and polyimide or the like may be given as an example.
