Methods of the present disclosure can be used to provide shaped ceramic precursor particles, wherein the shaped ceramic precursor particles have a peripheral loop portion encircling and abutting an interior portion, and wherein the peripheral loop portion comprises alpha alumina, and the interior portion comprises an alpha alumina precursor and is free of alpha alumina.
