The invention provides a method using rice bran for producing gamma amino acid butyric acid (GABA), and the method comprises the following steps: inoculating a rice culture medium containing L-sodium glutamate as a conversion substrate into a seed liquid according to the inoculation amount of volume ratio of 1-4%; and standing for culture, and separating to obtain GABA; wherein the rice culture medium comprises the following components: 15-50g / L of rice bran, 15-35g / L of L-sodium glutamate and 900mL of water, the seed liquid strain is lactic acid bacteria, saccharomycetes or aspergillus. The GABA prepared by the method is more safe, suitable for the manufacture of food, health care products and other products, high in yield, and low in cost, and has good application prospects.
