The invention relates to a novel energy-saving vertical pumping unit comprising a tower and a motor fixed on the tower. The motor is in linkage with a pumping rod and a balancing weight through a transmission mechanism, the transmission mechanism is of a winding structure and comprises a winding wheel and a reducer arranged on the tower, the motor is connected with the reducer through a synchronous belt, an output shaft of the reducer is connected with the winding wheel, haulage cables are arranged between the winding wheel and the pumping rod as well as between the winding wheel and the balancing weight, and the balancing weight and the pumping rod are located on two sides of the tower respectively.
