The invention discloses a gold strip reader and a detection method. The reader consists of an optical module, a control module, an input/output module and a gold test paper frame, wherein the optical module consists of a light-emitting diode (LED) module, a light evening plate, an imaging lens and an image sensor; multiple LEDs of the LED module are distributed in a central symmetry mode through the imaging lens; a round hole is formed in the center of the light evening plate, and the imaging lens extends out of the round hole; the control module consists of a multifunctional data acquisition card and a computer; the output end of the image sensor is connected with the computer through the multifunctional data acquisition card; the multifunctional data acquisition card is connected with the input/output module. The gold test paper strip can be detected at high sensitivity.
