The invention provides an image processing apparatus used for scanning a printed drawing. The image processing apparatus includes a scanning module used for scanning the printed drawing along a first direction of the printed drawing, a stepping module used for moving the scanning module in a second direction which is perpendicular to the first direction, a first judging module used for judging whether a strip image obtained by the scanning module along the first direction is blank or not when the scanning module moves a first distance along the second direction, and a first scanning control module used for controlling the scanning module to scan the printed drawing with a first resolution when a judgment result of the first judging module is that the strip image is blank. The invention also discloses a method for controlling the image processing apparatus.
