The invention provides an instant messaging method which comprises the steps that: a client-side obtains the coordinate information of the client-side and transmits the coordinate information to a background server; the background server creates a coordinate information database for client-sides according to the coordinate information of each client and also creates the index information of the coordinate information of each client-side; and when the client-side needs to change the coordinate information of the client-side on other communication equipment, the client-side transmits the newly-changed coordinate information to the background server, and then the background obtains the user information corresponding to the newly-changed coordinate information according to the newly-changed coordinate information and sends the user information to the client-side. The instant messaging method meets the demands of clients on changing cross-district positions and making local friends.
