The invention aims to provide an elevator which has the following advantages: high action reliability, low danger in setting operation and maintenance operation, and reduced wiring length. For this purpose, a speed regulator rope (3) is provided with an upmost layer detection detector (7a) and a downmost layer detection detector (7b). Furthermore an upmost layer detection sensor (6a) and a downmost layer detection detector (6b) are equipped next to a speed regulator driving side pulley (2). Furthermore a control part (9) which controls driving action of the speed regulator according to detection signals of the sensors (6a,6b) is provided. The control part (9) controls the driving action of the speed regulator according to the detection result of the upmost layer detection sensor (6a) to the upmost layer detection detector (7a) and the detection result of the downmost layer detection sensor (6b) to the downmost layer detection detector (7b).
