Zusammenfassung:Provided is a number identifying device and method, paper processing apparatus and automatic transaction processing apparatus, capable of reliably identifying the number marked on the paper. A bank note identifying part (number identifying device) (25) shoots the colored photograph of the bank note, the kind of the bank note and the direction of the bank note are determined by using the colored photograph to identify the number. When the bank note identifying part (25) identifies the number, the region where the bank note number is displayed is cut off, the background color and patterns of the region is eliminated, the image of the number is extracted and the character identification is performed.
