The invention provides a method for preparing (S)-4-bromine-1,3-butanediol, wherein (S)-4-bromine-3-hydroxy butyric ester is reduced by KBH4 in the presence of MgCl2 to prepare the (S)-4-bromine-1,3-butanediol.
