The cover-sheets are glued to the backs of bound book-blocks, the latter travelling at regular intervals along a conveyor after binding with their backs aligned with the inside of the portions of the covers to be glued to them. The covers are also pressed against the flanks of the backs. The blocks (5) are transported in the transverse position, and the cover sheets (2) have pre-shaped side sections. These are released from the shaping operation after the back portions have been pressed against the block backs. The sheets can be clamped at their back portions, and the side sections can be U-shaped, with their insides towards the block backs. The sheet material can be indexed along a track approaching the block track and in synchronism with the block movement.
