Zusammenfassung:	Crust formation during the phosphating treatment of metals employing an aqueous phosphating solution which contains metal ions and has a pH between 3.0 and 6.0 is reduced by the addition of a poly- alpha -oxyacrylic acid. The poly- alpha -oxyacrylic acid has the following formula < IMAGE > where the symbols have the meaning specified in Claim 1. The said compound is added for as long as it is still soluble in the water.
