Omega laurin lactam prodn. (I) X = NOH (II) X = O (III) is produced by the Beckman process by reacting a finely divided melt of (I) and (II) at 90 - 140 degrees C with HCl at 20 - 140 degrees C. No solvent or catalyst are needed and the process is continuous. (III) can be polymerised.
