A support for tubular membranes 17 employed in reverse osmosis comprises particles 14 bonded by a resin 15. The resin is usually coated onto the particles with the help of a catalyst. Voids 16 allow egress of pure water. The membranes 17 may be of modified cellulose acetate, e.g. aqueous magnesium perchlorate and acetone modified cellulose acetate. The filler particles 14 may be sand, zircon, quartz, beryl, talc, glass, limestone, calcium silicate or any other granular structure. Especially suitable are hollow spherical glass beads, vermiculite, expanded perlite and ground pumice stone. The resin may be phenolic; polyglycidyl ethers; polyesters; silicones and polystyrenes; polyimide and polyamide. Solvents used to promote coating may be an alcohol, ketone, aromatic hydrocarbon and the normally liquid organic solvents of the N, N-dialkylcarboxylamide class. Examples of the catalyst are given.
