Zusammenfassung:1277781 Brightening polymers CIBAGEIGY AG 18 July 1969 [19 July 1968] 36374/69 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Divisions C2 and D1] Polymers, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride and polyesters, are brightened using triazolyl coumarins of the Formula I: where R 1 is a C 1-4 alkyl or an optionally non- chromogenically substituted phenyl group, R 2 is a C 1-4 alkyl or an optionally non-chromogenically substituted benzenoid aromatic radical and R 3 is an optionally non-chromogenically substituted phenyl group. The brightener may be worked into the polymer, e.g. when dissolved in softening agents such as dioctylphthalate, or it may be dissolved in the monomers before polymerization, in the polymer mixture, or together with the polymer in a solvent. The treated material is then processed, e.g. by calandering, pressing, extruding, brushing, casting and, in particular, spinning. In examples, polypropylene is mixed with TiO 2 and brightener and melt spun; polyvinyl chloride powder, brightener, dioctylphthalate, di - n - butyldilauryl-dioxystannate and sodium pentaoctyltripolyphosphate are gelatinized and extruded in sheet form; polyterephthalic acid-ethylene glycol granulate is mixed with brightener then melt spun; dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol are heated with antimonous oxide with distillation of methanol, a brightener is added then the condensation is complete and the polymer extruded into filaments.
