Basic water-sol. dyes esp. for polyacrylonitrile

Water-sol. basic dyes contng. a quaternised pyridine nucleus bonded to an alkylene gp. of at least 2C prod. by (a) treating a dye contng. the alkylene gp. with an alkylating agent, (b) subjecting intermediate contng. the alkylene gp. and the quaternised pyridine nucleus to various reactions, e.g. condensn. or coupling. Esp. for polyacrylonitrile or "Darvan". Good light fastness. Good wool reserve. 17.3 p.b.w. 2-chloro-4-nitro-aniline were diazotised and coupled at 0-5 deg.C. with a soln. of 21.2 p.b.w. 2-(2-N-methylanilinoethyl)-pyridine in 1N HCl, the prod. sepd. and dried.
